Background:
Xiris is the one and only son and heir of Count Lysith and his wife, Sylena. From the time he was born until he was five years old, his parents had put him in the care of the Dawn’s Spire staff while they attended to business, not all of it being official business, either. In fact, Lysith’s neglect of his duties towards his city became so critical that the king threatened to take it away from him. So as part of a pact to keep the city in his family, Lysith offered Xiris as a suitor for Heresz’s daughter, Princess Midna. When the deal was sealed, Lysith then spent twenty years raising Xiris under suffocating scrutiny, quite opposite of how he had neglected him in the past. He emphasized the importance of Xiris’ looks, his verbal skills, and his ability to carry himself with confidence. If he failed to uphold these virtues, then his father would beat him to get the point across. Xiris has suffered several broken ribs, arm and leg fractures throughout his life, but his father would not touch his face and hands, which were his prized features. So despite Xiris’ rather willowy and fragile exterior, he has developed a high tolerance for pain and can take a good beating and think nothing of it. Unfortunately, with all the pressure put on Xiris to uphold his most superficial details, he never learned how to read, write, or do basic arithmetic. He can count, but that’s about it. To make up for it, Lysith employed Baelym, his imp slave, to follow Xiris around secretly and do the “dirty work” at times when Xiris was expected to read, write, or do anything that involved math skills above adding and subtracting.
